Initiating a vocational training intervention for youth in a Guatemala area.
Key Intervention Project on Youth Employment, 2013-2015
In launching efforts in Guatemala between October 2013 and January 2014, the ECLT Foundation commissioned Defensa de Ninos Internacional, which is part of Defense of Children International (DNI), to carry out a study to assess problems of child labour and youth employment in Guatemala and, particularly, identify gaps that might exist in tobacco-growing areas in Guatemala and delineate possible solutions.
The DNI study identified problems associated with child labour in tobacco-growing areas and some visible gaps; started to identify and engage some of the key stakeholders; and highlighted opportunities for punctual, relevant, and high-impact interventions. With the support of the ECLT Foundation board, we are now moving on to an initial intervention designed to provide vocational training for youth.
During this new phase, Defensa de Niños Internacional will work with identified stakeholders to develop and articulate a specific youth employment and vocational training intervention targeting youth in rural tobacco-growing communities and other agricultural sectors with a focus on La Máquina district.
