Theatre for Development Raises Awareness

CLEAR_theaterWhen the Theatre for Development Action Researchers arrived as part of the ECLT Foundation’s funded project implemented by CRECCOM, they staged a performance that facilitated discussion among community members, government, and CLEAR Project officials about the plight of children with regard to child labour. The group mobilised Mazenga’s community to unearth and uproot the preponderant causes of child labour, including poor school infrastructures.

Through the performance, communities realized the association between the lack of classroom blocks and the rate of children dropping out of school and falling susceptible to child labour.

Immediately, the District Education Management (DEM) promised community members that the DEM would employ a contractor to renovate the two dilapidated but usable classroom blocks and also refurbish another dilapidated structure that had been rendered unusable.

“I am grateful for those boys and girls from CRECCOM,” said the head master. “Their play made community members take the DEM to task until it set a date. That portrayed some seriousness.”
